Living the digital nomad lifestyle with a family?

Digital Nomadism without BS - Gonçalo Hall | Nomad City Festival 2023

Digital nomadism is more than pictures on the beach with a laptop. This lifestyle moves economies, exchanges knowledge and is able to move the world in a better direction. In this talk Gonçalo shows different project around the world that are having a positive local impact, talks about the trends and the future of this lifestyle always with the community at the heart of the action.

Catarina Silva and Gonçalo Hall have been traveling the world and working remotely for years, until their daughter was born, and everything changed... or did it? Now, they are more organized, plan meticulously, and stay longer in each destination, but giving up this lifestyle was never an option. For them, experiencing other places, cultures, people, and customs is the best education they can provide to their child. This nomadic family particularly praises Gran Canaria for its safety, comfort, sports and leisure offerings, and, especially, the thriving international community of remote workers that has already settled there.

Tell us a bit about yourself. Where are you from, and what do you do professionally?

My name is Catarina, I'm 30 years old, and I'm from Portugal. I have a degree in Tourism, but I never had the chance to work in that field. Over time, I developed new skills and knowledge. Currently, I work part-time for a human resources agency, recruiting tech talent. The rest of the time, I assist my husband with his projects.

At what point in your life did you decide to embrace remote work? Why did you make this choice?

Our first experience came about in Poland. My husband and I worked for a company with a 9-to-5 schedule. But thanks to the implementation of a flexible work policy that allowed us to telecommute for 6 months a year, we decided to go to Southeast Asia. That's when we became digital nomads, and I realized that remote work was the lifestyle I had always wanted.

What has this lifestyle brought to you?

I'm someone who loves to travel, explore new cultures, places, and meet new people. Remote work is the only way I can combine all of these passions. Freedom and flexibility are also crucial aspects of this lifestyle that I highly value.

The downside, however, is maintaining a routine and building meaningful relationships. Because we used to move every 2 or 3 months, just when we started getting to know people, having incredible experiences, and finding a good routine, it was time to move again. But now, with our baby, we'll be slower nomads and stay in one place for at least 5-6 months. Community also plays a significant role in this lifestyle; we only choose places that already have a community of digital nomads.

"We're excited to show our daughter different cultures, experiences, and perspectives at any time, not just during vacations."

What would you highlight about Gran Canaria as a destination?

We had initially planned to stay in Gran Canaria for only two months, but in the end, we stayed for five. We already knew Nacho Rodríguez, the founder of Repeople, and stayed in one of their coliving spaces. Just three days after arriving on the island, we were amazed and in love with the place and the lifestyle we could have here. Now, we are repeating our stay and residing in a space specifically designed for families like ours, in a cohousing on Panamá Street, just a few meters from Las Canteras Beach.

Both of us love CrossFit and playing beach volleyball. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has everything we love. The fact that we can train and play all year round is a great advantage for us. Moreover, we discovered a volleyball club, CVP Net 7 Gran Canaria, and when we joined, we knew we wanted to stay longer. We immediately connected with the locals, attended tournaments with them, and had incredible experiences. The sports culture here is also significant, and it has impressive facilities.

When we work, we mainly do so from Coworking-C, on Montevideo Street, and sometimes from some cafes (Un Lugar Café, Talleres Palermo, Organic Jungle). In summary, the lifestyle, the people, and the infrastructure are the main reasons why we love Las Palmas de Gran Canaria.

In what other places have you lived and worked remotely? Is there one that stands out? Why?

We've been to places like Bali, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, and some European countries. Our first experience and destination as digital nomads was Bali, and it will always be the best experience we've ever had. Bali is a bubble and one of the best digital nomad hubs in the world. The community is enormous and amazing (from CEOs and founders to freelancers and remote workers), the locals are the sweetest and most affectionate people we've met, and the food scene is incredible. Easy to get around, everyone speaks English, beautiful places around the island, unforgettable experiences, and the lifestyle itself.

How old is your child? Has their birth influenced any changes in your lifestyle?

Our baby is only 3 months old, and we won't change our lifestyle. The only impact and change we will make is the duration of our stay in each destination. Instead of moving every 2 or 3 months, we'll stay longer and relocate every 5 or 6 months. Apart from that, we don't intend to change much. At just 3 months old, he has already traveled by boat, plane, and toured Portugal from North to South :)

What is the life of a nomadic family like? What are the benefits?

We are still newcomers as a nomadic family, and surely we have a lot to learn, but so far, everything is going well.

The logistics are a bit more stressful than before because we want to make sure we don't forget anything, especially things for the baby. Our mindset is also different; it's no longer just my husband and me, now we have to consider if it makes sense to travel to a specific place, and we always prioritize the comfort and safety of the baby.

But the fact that we can show the world to our daughter at any time we want, not just during vacations, that she can learn from the experiences we have, meet new and multicultural people, and gain new perspectives and ways of seeing the world... it's simply amazing, and that's what excites us. We can shape a new generation of digital nomads and better human beings in general.

What requirements should a destination have for a nomadic family to temporarily reside there?

Traveling with a baby requires us to look for different things than we used to. Comfort and safety will always be at the top of the list, along with good infrastructure and a community of other nomadic families.

Nomadic families are a new industry full of opportunities. A good destination should focus on creating better accommodation options for these families, where we don't have to book separate apartments or rooms from the rest of the community and always feel like outsiders. Support for childcare is also a plus, especially when both parents work and only need a few hours to focus on their work. It's also great to see events and workshops for nomadic families.

Nomadic families value freedom, flexibility, and now also comfortable and safe destinations, like Gran Canaria.

"This lifestyle requires organization, logistics, research... but, undoubtedly, you'll create and raise better humans."

Would you recommend this life to other families? Why?

Ideally, parents should have some prior experience of working and traveling simultaneously. This is not a lifestyle for everyone and requires a lot of organization, logistics, research, and flexibility. I believe everyone should be able to give the best life to their children/family, and I truly think that with this lifestyle and traveling the world, you can do that and definitely create and raise better human beings."
